“Civil disobediance becomes a sacred duty when the state become lawless and corrupt.” -Mahatma Gandhi

Today I attended a press conference. Several NGOs got together to claim the repeal of the “Sedition Act”.

The “Sedition Act” was actually introduced to avoid extremism, but somehow the government manages it to abuse this law by arresting people who are simply raising their voices. I didn´t hear or read that- for example- terrorists were convicted under this law, only academics and freethinkers got arrested.

And these are only the "Key personalities".
And these are only the “Key personalities”.

I´ve always felt lucky to do the internship in this working field, because I´ve got to know really interesting personalities.

One of them is Adam Adli, who is 25 years and incredible political active. He´s engaging for the students movement, but also for the organisation “Bersih”. After he gave a speech to motivate people to demonstrate after the elections in 2013, he was arrested and detained for five days. He has also been banned for three semesters from uni. Shouldn´t a uni be proud of a student whos risking so much to improve the living conditions for its people and is able to think in a critical, intelligent way?

If someone is interested in reading the speech, which was seen as “national threat”, can read it down here.

“Take my details, lodge a police report, because today, I would like to invite all those here today to gather and take to the streets to seize back our power! Can we do that? Can we do that? Can we do that? We do not have much time left, get ready, buy shoes, buy tracksuits, buy jeans, get ready to take to the streets because in a third world country like Malaysia, elections cannot topple a government.

“Only the people’s power can topple a government. Remember, ladies and gentlemen, this is the only opportunity we have.”

This judicial decision is just another example what is down to political activists. Adam Adli didn´t mention that the election was manipulated, he also didn´t threat anyone. While police isn´t doing a lot to arrest real criminials, they´re arresting everyone else who isn´t fitting in the government´s picture, which should be a shame for the ruling  government. Doesn´t police have anything better to do? Whats for example with all the rape cases which are happening?
